SSC exams Eligibility Criteria: All exams

SSC conducts approximately ten exams (namely SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, SSC JE, SSC JHT, SSC GD Constable, SSC CPO, SSC Stenographer, SSC Selection posts, SSC MTS, and SSC Scientific Assistant) for recruiting the officers and clerks in the government departments and other ministries. It is the most popular exam after UPSC for recruiting the gazetted and non-gazetted officers in the government departments. Millions of students apply for these examinations every year resulting in higher competition among the students. Now, before applying in these examinations, you must possess some prerequisites qualification to appear in these examinations.

In this article, we will discuss the eligibility criteria determined by SSC for all its exams in details-

SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) Exam

SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) Exam

SSC JE (Junior Engineer) Exam

SSC JHT (Junior Hindi Translator) Exam

SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) Exam 

SSC CGL exam is conducted once in every year for selecting staff for various Group-B and Group-C posts. This examination generally comprises of four stages namely Tier-I (Preliminary exam), Tier-II (Mains Exam), Tier-III (Descriptive Paper), and Tier-IV (Data entry skill test/ Computer Proficiency Test). However, in attending all these phases, a candidate must possess the following eligibility-

a. Age Limit- 18-27 years, Maximum 30 years for some posts

How SSC promotes their officers recruited through CGL entry?

b. Minimum Educational Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognized University or Institute

    I. For Assistant Audit Officer/ Assistant Accounts Officer-

  • Essential Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or Institute
  • Desirable Qualifications: Chartered Accountant or cost & Management Accountant or Company Secretary or Masters in Commerce or Masters in Business Studies or Masters in Business Administration (Finance) or Masters in Business Economics.

     II. For Junior Statistical Officer- Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognized University or Institute with at least 60% Marks in Mathematics at 12th standard level or Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level.

SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) Exam

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the CHSL Exam for recruitment to various posts like:

• Postal Assistants/Sorting Assistants (PA/SA)

• Data Entry Operator (DEO)

• Lower Division Clerk (LDC)

• Court Clerk

This examination is conducted in two phases, namely Tier-I (Online exam) and Tier-II (Descriptive paper). For appearing in this exam, one must have the following qualifications –

a. Age Limit - 18-27 years as on the date of application

b. Minimum Educational Qualifications-

  • Must have passed 12th Standard or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.
  • For Data Entry Operator in the Office of Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG): 12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject from a recognized Board or equivalent.
c. Skill Test for Data Entry Operator
  • Data Entry Speed of 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depressions per hour on Computer.
  • For post of Data Entry Operator in the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG):- A speed Test of not less than 15000 key depressions per hour for data entry work to be ascertained through speed test on Computer.

SSC JE (Junior Engineer) Exam

SSC conducts JE exam to recruit eligible candidates for the post of Junior Engineers Civil, Electrical and Mechanical posts in various government departments. Following are the essential qualifications to appear in this exam-

Department of Posts – B.E. / B.Tech. / 3 years Diploma in Civil engineering from a recognized University/Institute.

Junior Engineer (Electrical)

Department of Posts- B.E. / B.Tech. / 3 years Diploma in Electrical engineering from a recognized University/Institute.

Junior Engineer (Electrical & Mechanical)

MES – B.E. / B.Tech. in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering OR 3 years Diploma in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University/Institute and with 2 years work experience in electrical/mechanical engineering works.

Junior Engineer (Civil)

MES – B.E. / B.Tech. in Civil Engineering OR 3 years Diploma in Civil Engineering from a recognized University/Institute and with 2 years work experience in civil engineering works.

Junior Engineer (QS&C)

MES – B.E. / B.Tech. / 3 years Diploma in Civil engineering from a recognized University/Institute OR Passed Intermediate examination in Building and Quantity Surveying (Sub Divisional-II) from the Institute of Surveyors (India).

SSC Junior Hindi Translator (JHT) Exam

Junior Hindi Translator, Junior Translator, Senior Hindi Translator and Hindi Pradhyapak posts are filled by SSC JHT exam, which is conducted every year. It is one of the most awaited examinations for the candidates, who possess a degree in Hindi language as a stream or as a subject. To appear in this exam, applicant must have the following prerequisites-

a. Age limit- Not exceeding 30 years as on the date of application.

b. Minimum Educational Qualification –

  • For Junior Hindi Translator/ Junior Translator in Central Secretariat Official language service/ Ministry of Railways/ Armed Forces headquarters/ Sub-ordinate offices implementing RRs model of DoP&T, a candidate can have a Master’s degree in any subject from a recognized university but Hindi as a compulsory or elective subject or as a medium of the examination at degree level. Besides this, for the above mentioned posts, a candidate can have a recognized diploma or certificate course in translation from Hindi to English & vice versa or two years’ experience of translation work from Hindi to English and vice versa in Central or State Government Office, including Government of India Undertaking.
  • For Senior Hindi translator in various central government ministries/ offices/ departments, a candidate can have a Master’s degree in any subject from a recognized university but Hindi as a compulsory or elective subject or as a medium of the examination at degree level.Besides this, for the above mentioned posts, a candidate can have a recognized diploma or certificate course in translation from Hindi to English & vice versa or 3 years’ experience of translation work from Hindi to English and vice versa in Central or State Government Office, including Government of India Undertaking.
  • For Junior Translator / Junior Hindi Translator in subordinate offices who have not yet adopted Model RRs of DoP&T for JT/JHT, a candidate must have a Master’s degree/ Bachelor’s degree of a recognized University in Hindi or English with English or Hindi as a compulsory or elective subject at degree level.

Note: Candidates must ensure that they have studied English and Hindi as main subjects in all the three years of B.A. Pass course.

  • For Hindi Pradhyapak in Central Hindi Training Institute, a candidate must possess the following educational criteria-
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Hindi with English as one of the subject at degree level either as compulsory or optional from a recognized University or Institute plus Master’s degree in any subject from a recognized University or Institute plus Bachelor of Education from a recognized University/Institute. OR
  2. Bachelor’s degree in any subject from a recognized University or Institute plus Master’s degree in Hindi with English as one of the subjects at degree level either as compulsory or optional from a recognized University or Institute plus Bachelor of Education from a recognized University/Institute.

SSC GD Constable Exam

SSC GD or SSC General Duty is one of the most reputed exams conducted by SSC every year. The candidates are selected for the post of Constable in BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSF, SSB, NIA and rifleman in Assam Rifles.  To appear in this exam, applicant must have the following eligibility-

a. Age limit- 18-23 years as on the date of application.

b. Minimum Educational qualification- A candidate must have passed matriculation or 10th class pass from a recognized Board/ University.

SSC CPO (Central Police Organization) Exam

Under SSC CPO exam, you can apply for the posts of Sub-Inspector (Executive) in Delhi Police, Sub-Inspector (GD) in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and ASI (Assistant Sub Inspector) in CISF (Central Industrial Security Force). To achieve these posts, one must fulfil the following criteria designed by SSC-

a. Age limit- 20-25 years as on the date of application.

b. Minimum Educational Qualification- Educational Qualification for all posts is Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or equivalent.

SSC Stenographer Exam

SSC Stenographer is an open competitive computer Based Examination for the recruitment of Stenographer Grade-C (Group-‘B’ Non-Gazetted) and Stenographer Grade-D(Group –‘C’, Non-Gazetted) in various government departments and ministries. To be a stenographer through SSC Stenographer exam, one must fulfil the following eligibility criteria-

a. Age limit- 18-27 years as on the date of application.

b. Minimum Educational Qualification- A candidate must have passed 12th Standard or equivalent from a recognized Board or University to appear in this exam.

SSC Selection Posts Exam

With this exam, a candidate is recruited under Group B/ Group-C Class-II/ and Group ‘C’, Non-Gazetted & Non-Ministerial category. Selection Posts are the limited vacancies for which essential as well as desired qualification is required. Sometimes having relevant experience also helps in getting this job. The name of posts and departments is issued zone wise by SSC every year. To appear in this exam, one must fulfil the following criteria-

a. Age limit- For some posts, it is not more than 30 years. While for other posts, it is 18-25 years/18-27 years.

b. Minimum Educational Qualification- Matriculation to Post graduate depending upon the job nature posted by the zonal office of SSC.

Know - How many marks should a general category candidate to attain in SSC exams?

SSC MTS (Multi-tasking Staff) Exam

SSC MTS exam is held for the recruitment of a general central service Group-‘C’ Non-Gazetted, Non-Ministerial post in various Central Government Ministries / Departments / Offices, in different States / Union Territories. After selection through SSC MTS exam, one is deputed as peon, dafatry, jamadar, farash, chowkidar, safaiwala, mali, junior gestetner operator etc. in various government departments/ministries. To apply for these posts, one must have-

a. Age limit- 18-25 years as on the date of application.

b. Minimum Educational Qualification- A candidate must have passed matriculation examination or equivalent from a recognized board.

SSC Scientific Assistant Exam

This exam is held for the recruitment to the post of Scientific Assistant in India Meteorological Department, Group-‘B’ Non-Gazetted, Non-Ministerial posts. To fill the application form for this post, one must have the following qualifications-

a. Age limit- Not exceeding 30 years as on the date of application.

b. Minimum Educational Qualification-  Bachelor’s degree in Science (with Physics as one of the subject)/ Computer Science/Information Technology/ Computer Applications OR Diploma in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from a recognized Institution/University or equivalent.

Note:  For all the above posts, nationality / citizenship is not going to change, which is as follows-

Nationality/ Citizenship- A candidate must be either:

  • a citizen of India, or
  • a subject of Nepal, or
  • a subject of Bhutan, or
  • a Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  • a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (Formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
