Himachal Pradesh Central University has declared that it would allow students to opt for Hindi as medium of examination in all of the courses run by the university, apart from English and other language courses. This would be first of its kind initiative by any central university in the nation.
According to the Vice-Chancellor Prof Kuldip Chand Agnihotri, “It is the right of the students to appear in Hindi if he/she doesn’t want to appear in English.” The decision was taken in this regard at a recently concluded executive council meeting at the University in Dharamshala.
He also said that the university would include MA Sanskrit as one of the courses offered by the university from the upcoming academic session and no tuition fee would be charged for the students who would opt for the course. The council has also decided to initiate a certificate course in History of Gujjars and also a certificate course in Gojri language.
According to Agnihotri, “The aim is to preserve Gojari and document Gujjar history and culture. There is no written text on the language spoken by Gujjars and it is facing extinction. By introducing a certificate course in Gojari, the university will be able to document the language. We will start a yoga Kendra in the central university of Himachal where research and study shall be carried out on ASTANG Yoga.”
He further pointed out that the university would introduce course including BSc (Honors) in Physics, MA in Sociology and MA in Sanskrit from this academic session.
