Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 notification with a total of 933 vacancies. The number of vacancies is lesser than the 979 vacancies notified in 2025. In 2024, UPSC had announced 1,056 vacancies while 1,105 vacancies were announced in 2023. The dip in the number of vacancies is indicative of the increasing level of competition among aspirants appearing for one of India’s most prestigious examinations.

The UPSC declared the CSE 2025 results on March 6,2026. A total of 958 candidates were recommended by the commission for appointment to various posts.

Out of the total candidates who appeared for the examination 14,161 qualified for the UPSC CSE Mains Examination. Following the Mains, 2,736 candidates were shortlisted for the Personality Test (Interview) round conducted after the August 2025 examination. Based on their performance in the Mains and Interview stages, UPSC  recommended 958 candidates for appointment after the interviews held between January and April 2026

According to the previous year's UPSC CSE Prelims Exam cutoff, candidates from the General category were required to score 92.66 marks out of 200 to qualify for the Mains examination. The cutoff for the OBC category stood at 88.66 marks, while candidates belonging to the EWS category needed 83.89 marks. For SC and ST candidates, the qualifying cutoffs were 80.17 and 77.17 marks, respectively. These cutoffs indicate the minimum marks required in the Prelims to advance to the next stage of the selection process.

A total of around 5.49 lakh candidates appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination on May 24, 2026. With 933 vacancies announced this year, approximately 11,000 to 14,000 candidates are expected to qualify for the Mains examination.  Along with the result, which is expected by June 15, the UPSC is also likely to release the GS Paper 1 cutoff marks, category-wise qualification data, and reserve list statistics. Candidates who clear the Prelims will have two months to prepare for the UPSC CSE Mains 2026, scheduled to begin on August 21.

More than 8,19,372 candidates had registered for the exam for approximately 933 including Civil Services, Police services and others. The prelims exam was held  in 2,072 exam centres in 83 cities across the country.

But, this year, UPSC has did the unusual thing by releasing the provisional answer key for the Prelims and also opened the objection window. This means that the cut off marks can also be released alongside the prelims result after analysing the marks from the official key.

The candidates who have appaered for this year's Prelims examination must be knowing that how much it is important to score marks in both the Prelims paper- GS and CSAT individually. Although, the CSAT paper is qualifying in nature, meaning you have to secure only 33% marks i.e. 66.67 marks, but most of the aspirants falter to obtain these marks. In contrast, GS Paper 1 requires a candidate to obtain marks eqaul to or more that the cut off marks released by the commission. Therefore, the candidates need to obtain good marks in GS paper.

Most of the candidates who have just started their UPSC Civil Services journey are unaware of the fact that the CSAT paper is only qualifying in nature and has little role in the Prelims result preparation. The CSAT paper consists of 80 objective type questions (MCQs) for 200 marks. Each question carries +2.5 marks and a neagtive marking of 1/3rd is assigned for each incorrect response. No penalty for unattempted questions. The candidates are need to secure 33% marks in the CSAT in order to be considered qualified in GS Paper 2.

The candidates can calculate their scores in the Prelims examination by analysing their answers with the answer key.

• Verify your marked answers with the answer key.
• Now calculate how many questions you have attempted correctly and how many are incorrect. Each question carries +2 marks in GS Paper 1 and +2.5 marks in CSAT. There will be a deduction of 1/3rd marks in both the papers for incorrect responses.
• Example for Calculating Scores in GS Paper 1: Suppose, overall you have attempted 70 questions. Out of which, 55 questions are marked correctly and remaining 15 are incorrect then your total score will be:
  • 55x2= 110
  • 15x0.33= 4.95
  • Total Score= 110-4.95= 105.05
• Scores for GS Paper 2/ CSAT: Candidates are required to qualify the CSAT as this is the qualifying paper and you need to obtain 33% marks in the paper.

UPSC Prelims exam pattern consists of oobjective type questions (MCQs) for both the papers: GS and CSAT. Check the exam pattern here:

• GS Paper 1: GS paper consists of 100 questions for 200 marks which means each question carries +2 marks. There is also provision for negative marking, 1/3rd marks are deducted for each incorrect answer. Therefore, the candidates should do guess working in a limited scope.
• CSAT Paper 2: CSAT paper consist of 80 MCQs for 200 marks, meaning each question carries +2.5 marks. Negative marking also applies to the CSAT paper i.e. 1/3rd marks are deducted for each incorrect response.

The UPSC Prelims consists of two paper- General Studies and CSAT. The candidates are required to appear for both the papers to be considered for the preparation of the result. This year, the UPSC has once again changed its course, and presented a paper which is considered to be toughest of all times. The General Studies Paper 1 or GS paper was very different from the usual lines. 

• Questions were lengthy which require more time to decode, analyse, and optimise for answers.
• GS paper also contained questions from Ethics which are not a part of the Prelims syllabus.
• These type of questions require much time to solve and hence, 2 hours time was not sufficient to solve such questions.

Therefore, the overall difficulty level of the exam considered 'Difficult'.
