The 11th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture was given out at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar on 24 November 2010. Five projects were declared as winners. The projects are- Wadi Hanifa Wetlands (Saudi Arabia), the Revitalisation of the Hypercentre of Tunis (Tunisia), the Madinat Al-Zahra Museum (Spain), the Ipekyol Textile Factory (Turkey) and the Bridge School (China). The winning projects were selected from 19 shortlisted project by an independent Master Jury. India’s Palmyra House in Alibag, near Mumbai found place in the list of 19 nominess selected from across the world. Palmyra House owned by industrialist Anand and Anuradha Mahindra was designed by Mumbai-based architect Bijoy Jain. Palmyra House built as a weekend retreat is a two-storey timber house that lies in the shade of an extensive coconut grove on coastal agricultural land facing the sea in south of Mumbai.
The Aga Khan Award for Architecture was established in 1977 by His Highness the Aga Khan with an objective to enhance the understanding and appreciation of Islamic culture expressed through architecture. The Award is organised on the basis of a three-year cycle and is governed by a Steering Committee chaired by the Aga Khan. Prizes totalling up to $500000 which marks the largest architectural award in the world are presented every three years to projects.
