India Current Affairs2 011. The Bihar government asked for help from the Union government of India to talk to Nepal to allow digging of an 11.6 km pilot channel of the Kosi River downstream from the Birpur Barrage

The Bihar government on 29 May 2011 asked for help from the Union government of India to talk to Nepal to allow digging of an 11.6 km pilot channel of the Kosi River downstream from the Birpur Barrage on the other side of the border.

The River Kosi is flowing dangerously close to the eastern bank on the Indian side, Bihar is constructing this channel as a part of its measures to control flood to change the direction of river current ahead of the monsoon.

The Birpur barrage- as well as the area around which Bihar is digging the channel- lies in Nepal territory. Bihar was forced to stop digging process because of stiff resistance from Nepal. Nepal has apprehensions that the channel can cause floods on its side.

Bihar asked the Union government of India to talk to Nepal regarding this and to allay any apprehensions of any flood in Nepal.

The Bihar government proposed an immediate meeting of the Kosi High-level committee at Birpur to solve the problem but Nepal didn’t respond. The Kosi committee has members from India and Nepal.
