The High Court of Calcutta on 14 May 2013 directed the State Government of West Bengal to conduct the Panchayat Elections in three phases in the state. The division bench of the Calcutta High Court that comprised Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Joymalya Bagchi directed the state government to announce full notification in consultation with the State Election Commissioner within three days.
The High Court in its orders also directed the state government to conclude the poll process by 15 July 2013 and asked it to deploy armed police in each and every hypersensitive and sensitive polling booth.
Earlier, the West Bengal Government moved to the Division Bench seeking stay on the orders that was passed by the single bench of the Court by Justice Vishwanath Sammadar to conduct of Panchayat polls.
