Chennai's Advay Ramesh wins Google Community Impact Award from Asia

Ramesh's device named FishErmen Lifeline Terminal (FELT) hand-held terminal uses the Standard Position Services (SPS), an open service without encryption provided by the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, to enhance fishermen's safety and productivity at the sea.

Advay RameshAdvay Ramesh, a Class 10 student from Chennai, on 19 July 2016 won the prestigious Google Community Impact Award from Asia, a theme based award part of Google Science Fair 2016.

Ramesh bagged the award for creating a device that enhances fishermen's safety and productivity.

Ramesh's FishErmen Lifeline Terminal (FELT) hand-held terminal uses the Standard Position Services (SPS), an open service without encryption provided by the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, to enhance fishermen's safety and productivity at the sea.

The 14-year-old Ramesh is also among 20 finalists shortlisted to compete for a 50000 US dollar scholarship from Google.

The Google Community Impact Award recognizes a project that makes a practical difference in the innovator’s community by addressing an environmental, health or resources challenge.

What is Google Science Fair?

The Google Science Fair is an online science competition sponsored by Google, Lego, Virgin Galactic, National Geographic and Scientific American.

The first ever Google Science Fair was announced in January 2011.

The competition is open to 13- to 18-year-old students around the globe, who formulate a hypothesis, perform an experiment and present their results.

All students must have an internet connection and a free Google Account to participate, and the projects must be in English, German, Italian, Spanish or French.

Entries are judged on eight core criteria, which include the student's presentation, question, hypothesis, research, experiment, data, observations and conclusion.

The grand prize includes a National Geographic trip to the Galapagos Islands, a 50000 US dollar scholarship, and an experience at a sponsoring organization. The finalists also receive a 25000 US dollar scholarship and assorted packages from sponsoring organizations.

In 2015, the Community Impact Award was won by Lalita Prasida.
