The Delhi state government on 5 August 2013 approved draft of the Delhi Lifts and Escalators Bill, 2013 which would transfer grant of licences for their registration from the Union government to it. The new legislation is aimed at ensuring better safety compliance in installation and maintenance of lifts, escalators and walk ways in the national capital.
Moreover, the legislation provides for stricter norms for their testing and certification and penalty for the violators. The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. The draft bill will be sent to the Union government for approval and then placed in the state assembly.
With this legislation in place, people will have to obtain licences for running lifts from a department of the Delhi state government which was earlier granted by the Union government of India. The state government will also periodically inspect the lifts in the capital.
