It is a shocker that Congress President Rahul Gandhi is going to suffer major setback in Amethi as BJP’s Smriti Irani is leading by more than 45000 votes for the Amethi Seat. In the meantime, the Congress party was not defeated in the past three decades, except in 1998. Rahul Gandhi in a press conference conceded defeat and congratulated Irani. He said "I respect the decision and congratulate Smriti Irani ji" in the same press conference. Rahul Gandhi was winning on this seat since 2004 and despite the party’s poor performance in 2014 general election; Mr. Gandhi was able to defeat Smriti Irani with a big margin.
As of now, Smriti Irani has won more than 3 lakhs votes while Rahul Gandhi is trailing by more than 45 thousands votes. In case Smriti Irani manages to defeat Mr. Gandhi, it would limit the Congress party to just one seat in Uttar Pradesh, which is Rae Bereli. In the meantime, Amethi is a rural constituency which is around 130 km from the capital city of UP.
In the year 2014, Smriti Irani campaigned aggressively in Amethi but lost to Rahul Gandhi. However, in 2019 the table has turned as Smriti Irani is set to win the Amethi seat as she worked hard and kept visiting the constituency on regular basis and launched central schemes there.
In addition to all these, Rahul Gandhi is also contesting from Wayanad in Kerala this time, and is winning from there with a whopping margin. Rahul Gandhi was away from Amethi as his campaigning was divided between two constituencies. Rahul Gandhi’s absence was fully capitalized by Smriti Irani and also accused Mr. Gandhi for ignoring his constituency.
Just after Rahul Gandhi conceded defeat in Amethi, Smriti Irani tweeted and said that nothing is impossible. Irani tweeted and said, "Kaun kehta hai aasman mein surakh nahi ho sakta”
