An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 and centered in Virginia shook much of Washington, D.C. USA on 23 August 2011. The tremor was felt as far north as New York City and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was half a mile (800 meters) deep. Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake happened at a depth of 3.7 miles. The quake was centered 27 miles east of Charlottesville, northwest of Richmond, the captial of Virginia, and south of Washington near the town of Mineral in Louisa County.
The movement lasted for no more than 30 seconds.
