Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav commences Tiger rallies across 51 reserves, launches portal on wetlands

The tiger rallies in India in 18 tiger range states across 51 reserves will cover a distance of over 7,500 km in 7 days (October 2 to October 8, 2021) traversing the picturesque and diverse landscapes spanning across the country.

The Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav on October 2, 2021, commenced Tiger Rallies in 18 tiger range states across 51 reserves in the country. It has been done as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and Wildlife Week Celebrations.

The tiger rallies in India will cover a distance of over 7,500 km in 7 days (October 2 to October 8, 2021) traversing the picturesque and diverse landscapes spanning across the country.

The Union Minister on the occasion also released the guidelines on sustainable eco-tourism in forest and wildlife areas, a field guide for monitoring the Indus river and Ganges dolphins, associated aquatic fauna and habitat, and Nagar Van guidelines.

The event took place at the headquarters of the Environment Ministry in Delhi. It was also attended by the Minister of State for Environment Ashwini Choubey, Additional Director Generals of Forests S.P. Yadav and Soumitra Dasgupta, and Environment Secretary R.P. Gupta.

What is the theme of Tiger Rallies?

The theme of the tiger rallies across 51 reserves across the country is “India for Tigers- A Rally on Wheels”.

Significance

As per the Environment Minister, the tiger rallies in India will bring together people from different walks of life and the large-scale coverage of the event will enable its global outreach. The rallies will simultaneously promote awareness of the significance of tiger preservation. 

Tiger Rallies across 51 reserves in India: Key details

• The tiger rallies were kicked off by the Union Minister virtually in three tiger reserves- Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, Biligiri Ranganathaswamy Temple (BRT) Tiger Reserve in Karnataka, and Sanjay Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh by waving a green flag.

The Tiger Rallies will journey across 51 tiger reserves, 18 tiger range states where the field directors, deputy directors, and the associated staff from the respective tiger reserves will follow the assigned routes.

They will later unite at the designated focal point of celebration (the first nine tiger reserves designated during the inception of Project Tiger in 1973).

The rallies will also conduct outreach activities along the way and at the focal point of celebration.

Environment Minister launches portal on wetland

The Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav also launched a web portal ‘Wetlands of India Portal’. It will act as a single point of access to all the information relating to the wetlands.

A dashboard on the portal for each state and UT across the country has also been developed in order to access the portal and populate it with the information of wetlands in their administration. The wetland portal will also provide a monitoring mechanism at the national, state, and district levels.
