First-ever national seminar on Transgenders and the Law was organised on 5 February 2011 by NLSA and DLSA.

The first-ever national seminar on Transgenders and the Law was organised on 5 February 2011 by the National Legal Services Authority (NLSA) and the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in association with the UNDP. The seminar was inaugurated by Supreme Court judge and NLSA executive chairman justice Altamas Kabir Judges from both Supreme Court and State High Court graced the seminar witheir presence. The judges took the opportunity to interact with members of the transgender community. The emphasis was on the integration of transgender into the mainstream of society.

 

The platform was used to spread the message that the third sex could not be ostracised and treated as aliens. It was pointed out at the seminar that despite the Indian Constitution guaranteeing right to equality and political rights and other benefits to every citizen to all the transgender community continues to be ostracised by the society. Pakistani Supreme Court's landmark judgment affirming their right of access to all government schemes and programmes was highlighted.
