The launch of the GSLV-F06 (Geo-Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle), carrying communication satellite GSAT-5P, on 25 December 2010 from Sriharikota, ended in a failure. GSLV-F06 was launched by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation).
The reason behind the failure of the GSLV-F06 was that the command to control the GSLV from the Equipment Bay (The electronic brain of the vehicle situated at the top the rocket), did not reach the actuators during the first stage of the launch. The launch failed because of the connector snapping, not because of any problem in its designing.
The earlier GSLV flight had also failed in April 2010. Since 2001, four GSLV flights have failed out of the seven GSLV flights launched.
GLSV is a three stage vehicle. The first stage includes S125 solid booster with four liquid (L40) strapons. Second stage is liquid engine and the third stage (GS3) is a cryo stage. GSLV is 49 metres tall, with 414 tonne lift off weight. GLSV was launched first on 18 April, 2001 by launching 1540 kg GSAT-1.
