India on 17 may 2011 asked Sri Lanka to probe allegation of human rights violations during the war against LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam). The matter was discussed during Sri Lankan foreign minister GL Peiris’s three-day visit to India. An Indo-Lanka joint statement was released on 17 May 2011 urged Sri Lanka to withdraw emergency regulations that give sweeping powers to the government. The joint statement also urged Sri Lanka to resettle the internally displaced persons and bring in genuine reconciliation among the ethnic groups.
The UN panel’s report which was released recently alleged that tens of thousands of civilians were killed during the last phase of the war against LTTE.
