India Current Affairs 2012. Khap Mahapanchayat was held in Haryana on 13 October 2012 focussing on the issues and crimes against women

Khap Mahapanchayat was held in Haryana on 13 October 2012 focussing on the issues and crimes against women. The panchayat had also appealed to the Centre and Haryana government to grant Khaps the status of Lok Adalats as their decisions on various issues are unanimous.

The Mahapanchayat was held in Sonepat District of Haryana and was attended by around Seventy Khaps. They controverted the idea of a Khap leader that marriageable age of girls should be brought down to 16 years mentioning the suggestion was "individual in nature" and should not be seen as stand of the body.

The function was presided over by Nafe Singh Nain and attended by various Khap leaders including Sube Singh Samain and Santosh Dahiya, president of Mahila (women's) wing of a Khap.

The panchayat had also demanded that marriage in the same gotra should be banned and suggested amendments to the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
