Milon Banerjee, who had been twice been the Attorney General (AG) of India, passed away on 20 July 2010. He had served as the law officer to governments headed by five different Prime Ministers between 1979 and 2009. He became the additional solicitor general in August 1979 and was appointed as solicitor general from 1986 to 1989. He served his first term as AG was from 1992-96 and the second from 2004-09. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in March 2005. His mother Probha Banerjee was the first honorary lady magistrate in India.
Attorney General of India: The Attorney General of India is Indian government's chief legal advisor and the government’s primary lawyer in the Supreme Court of India. The Attorney General is appointed by the President of India under Article 76(1) of the Constitution and holds office during the pleasure of the President. A person qualified to be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court is appointed as the AG. M. C. Setalvad was the first Attorney General of India. G E Vahanvati is India's current AG.
