Nirmal Gram Puraskar was awarded to 2808 Gram Panchayats from 21 States along with one Block Panchayat from Tamilnadu by President Pratibha Patil on 23 March 2011. The President while speaking on the occasion emphasised on the role of Panchayats pointing out that they are elected bodies at the grass root level and direct contact with the people. Panchayats play a milti-faceted role in rural development.
During the financial year 2010-11, cash award worth Rs. 44.5 crores has been released for the 2808 award winning Gram Panchayats. The amount of cash prize ranges from Rs. 50000 to Rs. 5 lakhs, based on the population of the Gram Panchayat.
Nirmal Gram Puraskar (NGP) given by Union Minister for Panchayati Raj and Rural Development has tremendous potential to change the quality of life in Indian villages. These awards enabled the Panchayats to become role models in their areas of jurisdiction for achieving hundred per cent sanitation and have motivated other Panchayats in transforming into clean and healthy villages.
A book on water security was also released on this occasion.
