Spain won its fifth Davis Cup title after Rafael Nadal defeated Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro 1-6 6-4 6-1 7-6 (0) on 4 December 2011. The victory earned Nadal his first title since winning his sixth French Open in June 2011. Nadal with the victory stretched his record on clay to 16-0.
Nadal earned his 20th straight victory since debuting in the competition in 2004.
Nadal caught Del Potro out with one of 35 winners to take the second set and cruise through the third set. However Potro’s late fightback broke Nadal four times in the fourth set to send it to a tiebreaker, where Nadal raced ahead without losing a point before securing victory with a forehand winner.
Argentina remained the only nation to play in four Davis Cup finals and never win one.
