Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi presented the Union Railway Budget in the parliament on 14 March 2012. Trivedi in his budget, proposed a number of new trains to be introduced over the next one year. The new trains which are proposed to be introduced include express trains, passenger trains, local trains and special trains.
• Union Railway Minister announced to introduce 75 new express trains, 21 passenger services (trains) in this budget. There are the 8 new MEMU services and 9 DEMU services projects have also been proposed.
• Railway Minister also proposed to introduce some special trains to cater to the special purpose. To facilitate rail travel to important places of Sikh pilgrimage, Railway Minister proposed to introduce “Guru Parikrama” special trains to be run on Amritsar-Patna-Nanded routes, where also a large number of people from all sects visit.
• 75 new services to be introduced in the Churchgate-Virar, Virar-Dahanu Road, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-Kalyan-Kasara and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-Kalyan-Karjat sections, Harbour and Trans-Harbour line, to further enhance the carrying capacity of suburban services in Mumbai.
• 18 new services on Chennai Beach-Tambaram, Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu, Chennai Beach-Avadi, Chennai Beach–Tiruttani, Chennai Beach– Gummidipundi/Sullurupetta and Chennai Beach–Velachery sections
• 44 new passenger services to be introduced in Kolkata including from Sealdah-Ranaghat, Ranaghat-Naihati, Ranaghat–Shantipur, Ranaghat-Krishnanagar, Ranaghat-Gede, Ranaghat–Bangaon, Bangaon-Barasat, Barasat-Hasnabad, Bandel-Barddhaman, Bandel-Howrah, Bandel-Naihati, Seoraphuli-Tarkeswar, Santragachi-Bagnan, Santragachi-Amta, Santragachi-Mecheda, Santragachi-Panskura, Howrah–Haldia, Howrah – Kharagpur and Mecheda-Digha.
• While, the minister announced to extend the run of 40 trains, frequency of 23 trains have also been increased.
