The Supreme Court of India on 4 April 2013 ordered the Union and the State Governments to make punishments for violation of traffic rules mainly misuse of red beacons by VIPs harsher. The Supreme Court asked the governments at both levels to introduce the provision of confiscation of vehicles and increase the fine amount to 10000 rupees.
The Court have granted a union and states government to amend the rules by second week of July 2013 and failing to abide by the orders of the court would be make the court pass its orders in this regard.
The Apex Court in its orders ordered the Governments to restrict use of the red beacons by the VIPs allowing it to be used just by the heads of political executive, legislature, judiciary and persons, who holds the constitutional posts.
