SpiceJet decided to launch its flights to Guangzhou in the first week of February 2013. With this launch, the low-cost carrier, SpiceJet will become the only Indian private airline to fly China. It has decided to launch the four weekly flights starting from New Delhi to Guangzhou.
The first flight by SpiceJet towards the southern port city in China will depart on 8 February 2013 from New Delhi. The duration of the flight will be 4 hours and 35 minutes via the Boeing 737 aircraft. SpiceJet has already started booking the tickets for the flight.
As of now, Shanghai remains the only southern mainland city which is connected to India via airlines such as Air China and Air India. Air China holds operations of 14 weekly flights to Indian cities like Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi from Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai. Air India, on the other hand, has the route from Shanghai to New Delhi.
With the launch of this flight, SpiceJet looks towards targeting the business community. It will also direct its attention towards the southern part of the country. Furthermore, SpiceJet has plans to launch its flights to other Chinese cities such as Macau, Zhuhai and Hong Kong.
First Indian carrier flying to China
Jet Airways was the first Indian carrier that flew to China. It launched flight from Mumbai to Shanghai and thereafter towards San Francisco in 2008. However, the flight was later discontinued.
