Sri Lanka Opened Hambantota Port

Sri Lanka on 18 November 2010 opened Hambantota Port with the Chinese assistance.

Sri Lanka on 18 November 2010 opened Hambantota Port with the Chinese assistance. The first phase of Hambantota port was constructed by the China Harbour Engineering Company with the cost of 360 million dollars. Hambantota port provides for cargo handling, warehousing, advanced quality passenger terminal and custom clearing facilities.


The location of the Hambantota port is just 10 nautical miles from one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. The total cost of the project is 1.5 billion US dollars.
