The Indian government sacked Suresh Kalmadi and his lieutenant Lalit Bhanot from the Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee on 24 january 2011. The decision to oust Kalmadi and Bhanot was taken in the interest of impartial and unhindered investigations of CWG scam by the CBI. CBI had complained to the cabinet secretary that the presence of Kalmadi and Bhanot in the OC was hindering the investigation into alleged corruption in organizing the Games. The government also sought the opinion of attorney general Goolam E Vahanvati to decide whether to remove Kalmadi from his other post-chairman of the Indian Olympic Association.
