Tamil Nadu government on 15 January 2012 decided to start an integrated Urban Development Scheme at a cost of 6653 crore rupees with the objective of improving basic infrastructure facilities in cities and urban areas in the state.

Under this scheme, basic infrastructure like drinking water, health, rain water drainage, solid waste management, parking facilities, parks, solid waste management and sewage water removal. In the first phase, urban areas including corporations and municipalities as well as town panchayats will be improved at a cost of 757.28 crore rupees.
