The HRD (Human Resource Development) ministry on 8 July 2011 superseded the National Council for Teacher Education through a gazette notification. All members of the NCTE were asked to vacate their office. Now all powers and duties would now be carried out by officials appointed by the HRD ministry.
The HRD ministry took this step because it found the large scale irregularities in the grant of recognition to teacher training institutes.
