Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati passes away

Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, the Kanchi Shankaracharya, passed away on February 28, 2018 in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. He was 82. He was 69th pontiff of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.

He will be succeeded by the junior pontiff Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi, the 70th Shankaracharya of Kamakoti Peetam traditionally referred to as Kamakshi.

He was named as the successor to Kanchi Mutt by Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swami and was given the title Jayendra Saraswathi on 22 March, 1954, when he became the younger pontiff. He became an elder pontiff in 1994.

Kanchipuram Mutt that was established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.

National Science Day 2018 observed across India

The National Science Day 2018 was observed across India on February 28, 2018. This year celebrations of the Day were organised by the Department of Science & Technology (DST).

On the occasion of National Science Day, the National Awards were conferred on the awardees for 2017 for their outstanding contribution in communication of Science & Technology and for promoting scientific temper.

The theme of National Science Day 2018 is 'Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future'. The theme aims to raise public appreciation of the scientific issues.

 

CBSE grants one-time relaxation in passing marks to class 10 students

The Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE) has decided to grant a one-time relaxation in passing marks to the students of class 10 who are scheduled to give their board exams from next week.

The board has decided to implement overall 33 per cent pass mark criteria for this batch of students.

The board’s current decision means that the students would not need to secure 33 per cent marks separately in board exams and internal assessments.

AK Pradhan appointed as Group Chief Risk Officer of PNB

After being hit by nearly Rs 12700 crore fraud, Punjab National Bank (PNB) on February 27, 2018 appointed its general manager A K Pradhan as the Group Chief Risk Officer.

However, the bank did not disclose the functions and responsibilities of the Group Chief Risk Officer.

On February 14, 2018, the Punjab National Bank detected the fraud wherein jeweller Nirav Modi and associates allegedly cheated the bank by acquiring fraudulent letters of undertaking from one of its branches for overseas credit from other Indian lenders. The fraud was estimated at Rs 11400 crore.

However, recently on February 26, 2018, the amount of fraud in Nirav Modi case was revised to Rs 12700 crore.

India ranked 47th in Inclusive Internet Index 2018

India was ranked 47th out of 86 nations in the Inclusive Internet Index 2018, which was released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on February 26, 2018.

The EIU was commissioned by social media giant Facebook. This year's index covered 91 per cent of the world's population and an expanded data set of 86 countries, up from 75 countries in 2017.

The report ranked India at the 47th position when it comes to inclusive Internet and connectivity for all due to low usage and poor quality.
