Latakia, the Syrian town 350 km north-west of Damascus, witnessed mass unrest against the Syrian government on 25-26 March 2011. The unrest first started in the southern town of Derra on 18 March 2011 and spread to several cities country-wide. Decades of emergency rule and restrictions on political freedoms and civil liberties are the causes behind the unrest in Syria.
