The Uttar Pradesh government announced a new policy on 2 June 2011 for the acquisition of land and compensation paid to the farmers in the state. According to the new policy, private developers could directly acquire the land from the farmers and the government will play the role of facilitator only and such acquisitions will take place only with the consent of 70 per cent of the farmers in a given area. The UP government’s role would be limited to issuing a notification under section 4 of the land Acquisition Act, 1894.The state government announced this new policy following a Kisan Panchayat addressed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.
It should be noted there were large scale public protests in May 2011 against the UP government’s land acquisition policy in Bhatta-Parsaul , the twin villages in Greater Noida.
