Indian-American Vijay Gandhi was sworn in as the Magistrate Judge for the District Court of the Central District of California on 14 April 2010. He became the first Indian-American federal judge in California and the second ever Indian-American federal judge in the history of the United States. According to the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, he is one of the youngest federal judges currently serving in the Central District. He would preside in Los Angeles and serve more than 19 million people in the largest district in the nation. The first Indo-American who was sworn in as magistrate judge was Judge Amul Thapar, who was appointed to the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Kentucky on 13 December 2007.
