Wang Yi, the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, made visits to four African countries, Togo, Egypt, Ivory Coast, and Tunisia from 13th January to 18th January. This proved to be the 11th annual trip of Wang Yi, the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Africa. The purpose was to foster the security and economic cooperation with Africa.
The visit of Wang Yi
The visit of Wang Yi to Africa had numerous purposes.. The chief of them was to execute the China-Africa Leaders Dialogue's outcomes held last year in the month of August in South Africa. It comprised of the implementation of three important initiatives. One of them dealt with encouragement to industrialization in Africa, cooperation on talent development, and agricultural modernization. China has expressed its desire in Egypt to be a global actor by means of mediating peace in Gaza. The Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs met the leaders of Egypt and the Secretary General of the League of Arab States. The minister called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Objectives of China in Africa
The very first objective of China in Africa is access to important resources. Africa provides for about 90 percent of the platinum and cobalt of the world. It is also a supplier of over 75 percent of the total coltan of the world. This coltan is essential for electronics. Additionally, China holds the largest refineries in China fir the minerals that are not only important for its tech industries, but also rare.
The second of these objectives is the geopolitical aspirations of Africa. Yes, Africa holds the position of the largest bloc in the UN General Assembly. It holds significant influence on resolutions on controversial issues such as the issue of the South China Sea. Africa has always shown its support to China openly in many aspects, like the "One China' policy for Hong Kong and Taiwan.
