Two-time ICC Champions Trophy winners Australia have announced their preliminary 15-player squad for the 2025 edition of the tournament, highlighted by the return of captain Pat Cummins.
Cummins will lead the team in Pakistan, following confirmation that he will skip the upcoming Test series in Sri Lanka to recover from an ankle injury.
The squad includes maiden ICC event call-ups for Matt Short and Aaron Hardie, along with fast bowler Nathan Ellis, who has also secured a place. These three players replace David Warner (retired), Cameron Green (sidelined by back surgery), and Sean Abbott.
Pat Cummins Unlikely for Champions Trophy: Major Blow for Australia
Australia’s ICC Champions Trophy plans have suffered another setback. Skipper Pat Cummins and key bowler Josh Hazlewood are unlikely to play in the tournament.
The team was already weakened by the loss of all-rounder Mitch Marsh due to injury. Now, the absence of Cummins and Hazlewood could further hurt their chances of winning a third Champions Trophy title. The 50-over tournament will begin on February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai.
Australian coach Andrew McDonald spoke about the situation on Wednesday. He admitted that the team might need a new captain for the tournament since Cummins is unlikely to recover in time.
"Pat Cummins has not started bowling again, so he is highly unlikely to play," McDonald told SEN radio. "That means we need a captain."
He mentioned that Steve Smith and Travis Head are the main options for the role. "We've been discussing leadership with them while finalising the team," he said.
McDonald praised Smith for his leadership in the first Test against Sri Lanka and in past ODI matches. "So it's between those two," he added.
Josh Hazlewood is also struggling with fitness. The medical team will confirm his status in the coming days. The final decision on leadership and team selection will be announced soon.
