World Adult Day

Jan 23, 2015, 14:19 IST

Between 2000 and 2050, the absolute number of people aged 60 years and over is expected to increase from 605 million to 2 billion over the same period.

Introduction

According to the World Health Organization, there are 600 million people over 60 in the world today and the figure is expected to double over the next 11 years. One of the biggest social transformations is population ageing. Soon, the world will have older people than children and more people of old age than ever before. Their health is determined by and contributes to broad social trends. Economies are globalizing, more and more people live and work in cities, family patterns are changing and technology is evolving rapidly. An adult is considered to be “living at home” or “living with parents” on the basis of the adult’s relationship to the head of the household. An adult is “living with parents” if at least one parent resides in the household.

The Biological clock

The one occurrence most of us will share is ageing. There is only one thing. Let us celebrate the fact that countless millions of people in growing countries have reached later life.

Unfortunately, the ones who have laid the foundation for the society face dishonor in one or other way. Sensitizing a society that is thoughtful for them and promoting hale and hearty living among our youth so that they don’t face problems during their old age is a huge issue.

Multi-generation households

On the other hand, the situation of youth has really fundamentally changed and it looks different from the situation of their parents and grandparents. There are many evidences, at the time that young people should be becoming autonomous adults making their own way in the world. The young adults could be classified as residing in a multi-generational household. But at the same time there are growing tendencies of young adults to live in multi-generational households may be another sign of their delayed entry into adulthood.

Facts and figures of ageing

  • The world will have more people who live to see their 80s or 90s than ever before. More children will know their grandparents and even their great-grandparents, especially their great-grandmothers. On average, women live six to eight years longer than men.
  • In 1910, the life expectancy for a female was 33 years, today it is 82 years. This represents a remarkable gain of almost 50 years of life. The past century has seen remarkable improvements in life expectancy. This is largely due to improvements in public health.
  • Between 2000 and 2050, the absolute number of people aged 60 years and over is expected to increase from 605 million to 2 billion over the same period.

The colossal cause for observing this day is to demonstrate that healthcare; cleanliness and sanitation, water quality and education are actually paying off and helping us to live longer. However, growing old is not always easy. It is now common for young adults to live with multiple generations of relatives than it is for those 85 or older, the group most likely to live with family members.

Conclusion

Thus, this growth reflects a historic change than the rise in adults, younger than 25. Young adults are marrying later i.e. 29 for men and 27 for women. However, many youth experience setbacks by becoming parents too, dropping out of school, failing to find work etc. Married couples are more likely to live on their own. A slow economic recovery has played a bigger role than in recent years. A young single adult living alone was considered either of suspect morals or at the very least likely to be irresponsible. The downside is, this trend means the current generation does not have the economic advantages of previous generations.
