According to media houses, a holiday has been declared by the state government for the schools in Ramanathapuram District due to the heavy rainfall received in the area.
According to media reports, on Sunday, October 20, 2019, heavy rainfall was predicted by the Regional Meteorological Centre for Chennai and surrounding areas for two days. The Regional Meteorological Centre stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over the state for the next two days along with thunderstorm with lightning warnings for some places which are expected to extend until October 25. It was also stated that the North-East monsoon this month is expected to bring heavy rainfall in the state of Tamil Nadu.
A red alert was also issued on Monday sighting extremely heavy rainfall in parts of the state. The Regional Meteorological Centre has also issued a red alert for today stating that extremely heavy rainfall is likely to occur in isolated placed over the state including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni and Dindigul districts. It has also stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in placed over Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Vellore, and Thiruvannamalai districts in Tamil Nadu.
Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai director S Balachandran said that for the next two days Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to receive rainfall in most areas. The district of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Toothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Tiruvallur, Nilgiris and Coimbatore will also see extremely heavy rainfall. Other districts that can expect rainfall in the coming two days include Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Salem, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Erode and Tiruppur, he added.
The Indian Meteorological Department in a bulletin has stated that the conditions are likely to be cloudy with light to moderate rain with thundershowers expected to continue. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be 29 and 24 degree Celsius respectively.
