Kerala HC Bans Protests: Kerala High Court has passed an order imposing ban on any form of agitations including student strikes and protests on campus in college and school campuses located in the state. As per media reports, the Kerala High Court’s order has now banned any form of protest including strikes from educational campuses based in the state. The court’s order comes in response to over 25 petitions filed by various educational institutions which highlighted the loss of academic days due to protests and strikes by the students.

Court Quotes Right To  Study to Ban Protests

Kerala High Court, while delivering the judgement, said that ‘Right to Study’ was a fundamental right of the student and therefore, other students cannot indulge in activities that impede this right. Students who organize strikes and protests on educational campuses disrupt studies and thereby prevent other students from their right to study. The court’s order came in response to a plea filed by various higher education institutions and schools against campus politics and its adverse impact on the academic environment.

Court Backs Discussions, says No to Protests

The Kerala High Court’s judgement also said that it promotes debate and discussions on any topic to be held on educational campuses. However, such activities should not disrupt academic environment and studies for other students. The court also noted that no student should be forced to participate in any form of agitations, protests, strikes on educational campuses.

Furthermore, to ensure conducive academic environment that is suited to holding of classes and studies for the students; the Court has also asked educational institutions to take help of police. The court ruled that educational institutions can take help of police to ensure that no laws are broken on educational campuses and also suggested initiation of legal action against elements who break rules.
