Theme of The Sermon At Benares

The story revolves around the concept of birth and death. Here, Lord Buddha gives his first sermon regarding the mortality of human beings and how it has to be taken after being born. No one is immortal and people should never be selfish about losing their loved ones, since everyone has to die someday.

Summary of The Sermon At Benares

The story is about the awakened god, Lord Gautam Buddha who was born into a Hindi family. He was named as Siddharta Gautam and lived a normal like everyone else. He was sent to school for studying sacred Hindu scriptures at the age of 12 and when he returned, he was married and they had a son. They lived together for almost 10 years after which Buddha decided to go on attaining enlightenment, which was provoked by the sufferings of people he had observed in his life. After wandering for 7 years he sat under a peepal tree where he vowed to stand up only after attaining enlightenment. After 7 days he was enlightened, and he renamed the tree as Bodhi Tree, the tree of wisdom.

His first preaching as a sermon was at Benares where a woman named Kisa Gotami who had lost her son went on in search of some help to save his child. During the search, she came across a man who told her that she should meet Sakyamuni, the Buddha. He would be able to provide her with some medicines to cure the child.

On reaching Buddha, he asked her to get some mustard seeds from the house where people have not lost any relatives, kin, family, or friends. She accepted the request of the Buddha and went on searching for such a seed. After spending the entire day in search of the mustard seed, she sat across the footpath of the city where the lights were flickering time and again. On spending some time there, she realized that she had been selfish because of the overwhelming emotional roller coaster ride that she was on after the death of her child. She realized that just like the light, human lives also flicker. They extinguish after a person is dead.

The Buddha tells her that a person who is mortal is always under the threat of death and that if one is born, he/she shall die someday.
