In an era of growing economic and commercial activity, even hobbies and other expertise have also become a means of earning. In such a scenario, it is but natural that employment and earning opportunities are being explored in the field of dance. The present generation is whole-heartedly taking part in this and changing social environment has thrown up a large number of people who wish to become dancers. This is because a small amount of labor could make them a star overnight. Sensing this psychology of young people, several public and private institutions have included dance as a subject in their curricula.
Eligibility
Minimum qualification required is 12th pass for making a career in dance. However, in this field, understanding of rhythm and right body language along with ability to present dance steps in a correct way is more important than mere book knowledge.
Scope
Employment opportunities exist in art centers, various TV channels, dances troops, etc. Good career options are available as dance teachers, choreographers and as performers. Bollywood also presents exciting employment opportunities in the form of TV channels (like channel V and MTV), dance institutes, and music albums etc. Indian folk dance, and BHANGRA, etc. are quite popular overseas. Plenty of opportunities are available for people trained in western dance forms like Salsa, Jazz, Rock, Hip-hop, etc. Besides, you can also start your own business by opening a dance institute. By earning a degree or diploma in dance, you can become an excellent choreographer and earn in lacks. Now, dance has been included as a major course in many universities. So many career options are available there too. Dance reality shows have helped in mitigating peoples hesitations. Now even small town people are seeking career in the field of dance.
Courses
Dance has been divided into two parts. First one is Shastriya or classical, and the second one is folk dance. During studies, general knowledge is disseminated about both of these forms as well as about history of dance and its importance in the current scenario. Apart from certificate courses, Diploma, Degree and Post Graduate level courses can also be done in dance. In this course, apart from pure dance, detailed knowledge about choreographing to various tunes and its finer points is also provided. Moreover, an excellent career can be built in this field with practical as well theoretical knowledge.
Fees
Fees vary according to the kind of dance course. Degree or diploma can be earned from Government institutions by paying minimal fees. However, private institutes charge anywhere between 25 thousand to one lakh in fees. Fees for learning Kathak and other Indian dances are from 5 thousand to 20 thousand rupees, whereas summer and hobby courses can be done in one thousand rupees also. Minimum duration of such courses is one month.
