About Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in a Telugu Brahmin family in a village near Thiruttani India, in the erstwhile Madras Presidency near the border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states. His early years were spent in Thiruttani and Tirupati. Radhakrishnan was awarded scholarships throughout his academic life. He joined Voorhees College in Vellore but switched to the Madras Christian College at the age of 17. He graduated from there in 1906 with a master's degree in Philosophy. 

 The scholar believed that teachers played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's future and should be duly acknowledged.He articulated, "Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teacher's Day." He saw this as an opportunity to underscore the significance of education and the teachers' role in nurturing young minds, fostering knowledge and instilling wisdom.

1.Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (5 September 1888 – 17 April 1975) was an Indian philosopher, statesman and educator. 

2.He was a remarkable person who believed in the power of education and the role of teachers in shaping our lives. He believed that teachers played an important role in shaping the future of students. 

3.Radhakrishnan believed in the transformative power of education and had great respect for the teaching profession. 

4.Radhakrishnan was elected as the first Vice-President of India in 1952 and later elected as the second President of India (1962–1967).

5.When he became the President, some of his students requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday on September 5. The great scholar replied,"Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teacher’s Day."
