(i) Why were bastions made in the fort wall?

(ii) Why were big holes made in them?

(iii) What difference would be there if you were to look from a straight flat wall or a bastion at a height? How would the soldiers find peeping from the holes in the bastions useful while attacking?


(i) Bastions were made to safeguard the fort from enemies.

(ii) Big holes were made in the bastions to see at a distance and attack on enemies coming towards the fort from several directions. 

(iii) Bastions are built at a height and provide space to look on distant places from several directions. Soldiers can peep through its holes safely. However, with flat walls one could see in one particular direction only.

Think and Discuss

(i) How would the fountains have worked?

(ii) What arrangements would have been made in the building for air and light?

(iii) Look carefully at the picture of the beautiful carving on the wall. What kind of tools would have been used for such fine carving?

(iv) We still do not have any electricity at many places in our country. Even at places which do have electricity, imagine what would happen if there was no electricity for one week. What are the things that would be difficult to manage without it?


(i) Fountains would have worked by getting their water supply from large tanks or reservoirs.

(ii) Large doors, windows and ventilators would have been made to allow air and light enter the building.

(iii) Sharp cutting tools like chisel and hammer made up of iron would have been used for such fine carving.

(iv) If there was no electricity for one week, most of our daily activities would get hampered.  There will be no water, TVs and computers will not work, phones will stop working, internet connectivity will go off, no lights, no fans and coolers. Thus, it will lead to a completely drastic situation.

Tell and Write

Look carefully at the map of Golconda. On the map, arrows show all the four directions.

(a) If you are peeping inside from Bodli Darwaza, in which direction from you is Katora Hauz?

(b) If someone is entering from Banjara Darwaza, in which direction from her is Katora Hauz?

(c) In which direction will you walk from Bala Hisar to reach Moti Mahal?

(d) How many gates can you see on the outer walls of the fort?

(e) Count how many palaces are there in the fort?

(f) What arrangements for water can you see inside the fort?


(a) Katora Hauz is in the north direction.

(b) If someone is entering from Banjara Darwaza, Katora Hauz is in her south direction.

(c) We would walk towards east from Bala Hisar to reach Moti Mahal.

(d) There are eight gates on the outer walls of the fort.

(e) There are five palaces in the fort.

(f) There are three tanks (Hauz) and five stepwells (Baoli) inside the fort.

On the map, 1 cm distance is equal to a distance of 110 metres on the ground. Now tell:

(i) On the map the distance between Bala Hisar and Fateh Darwaja is _______ . On the ground, the distance between the two would be _______ metres.

(ii) How far is Makai Darwaza from Fateh Darwaza?


(i) On the map the distance between Bala Hisar and Fateh Darwaja is 9 cm.

On the ground, the distance between the two would be 9 × 110 = 990 metres.

(ii) On the map distance between Makai Darwaza and Fateh Darwaza = 10.5 cm

1 cm on map = 110 metres on ground

Thus, on ground, the distance between Makai Darwaza and Fateh Darwaza = 10.5 × 110 = 1155 m.

(i) Have you recently read or heard about any country attacking or going to war with another country?

(ii) Find out what was the reason for this war.

(iii) What kind of weapons were used in this war?

(iv) What kind of destruction was caused because of this?


(i) Yes, recently I heard about India attacking the Pakistan.

(ii) Reason for this war was terror attacks on Indian army men.

(iii) Fighter planes, tanks, missiles, etc. were used in this war.

(iv) Many soldiers lost their lives in this attack.

Find Out

The big gun that Shreedhar saw was made of bronze.

(i) Have you seen anything made of bronze? What?

Tribal people have been using bronze to make many things since thousands of years. One wonders how they took out copper and tin from the deep mines, melted these metals, and turned them into beautiful things!

(ii) Find out from your elders about some of the things made from bronze that were, or are still used in your house. From its colour try to identify which one of them is made from copper, which from brass, and which from bronze.


(i) Yes, I have seen utensils, medals and statues made up of bronze.

(ii) There are some utensils like tumbler, plates, bowls of bronze there in our house. Goods made up of copper, brass and bronze can be distinguished by their colours as follows:

Arrangements for Water

(i) The picture shown here is made after seeing a very old painting of those times. Can you think why bullocks have been used here?

(ii) Use your hand movement to show in which direction the drum attached to the rod moves when the bullocks move?

(iii) In which direction would the ‘toothed wheel’ move?

(iv) Now imagine, how would this garland of pots lift water from the well?

(v) Do you now get some idea about how the tanks could have been filled by lifting water from the wells?

(vi) Where else have you seen such wheels attached to each other? For example— in, the gear of a cycle or somewhere else?

(vii) Look around and find out how water is pumped up from the ground to higher places?

(viii) How is water pumped using electricity? How is water lifted without electricity?


(i)  The bullocks have been used to draw water.

(ii) The drum moves in anticlockwise direction.

(iii) The toothed wheel moves in clockwise direction.

(iv) The garland of pots is connected with the toothed wheel which again is connected to the drum. As the bullocks move the drum, the toothed wheel connected to it also moves, which in turn rotates the garland of pots which lifts water from the well.

(v) Yes, the tanks could have been filled up by lifting water from the wells using bullocks.

(vi) I have seen such wheels attached to each other in clock, sewing machine and generators.

(vii) Electric water pumps are used to lift water to the higher places.

(viii) Water is pumped using electric water pump which has a motor to suck the underground water and lift it to the higher places. In the absence of electricity, water can be lifted using hand-pumps, bucket tied with rope, windmill or bullocks.

Close Your Eyes and Go Back in Time!

(i) What is the Sultan doing in the palace? What kind of clothes is he wearing? What dishes are being offered to him? But why does he seem so worried? And in what language is he talking?

(ii) Imagine the rooms in the palace—the beautiful carpets and curtains, the fountains on the terrace…and the sweet smell of roses and chameli—where is this coming from?

(iii) What are the different kinds of factories you can see? How many people are working there? What are they doing? What are they wearing? How long do you think they work?

(iv) Look there! See how finely those craftsmen are carving the stones using a chisel and hammer? Can you see the stone dust in the air? Do you think this stone dust would harm them in some way?


(i) The Sultan is in a meeting with his ministers. He is wearing a long dress with a lot of embroidery and jewel work done on it. It is looking very elegant. He is being offered mughlai food, drinks and sweet dishes. He seems to be worried about the possible attack by enemies on his kingdom. He is talking in Arabic language.

(ii) The rooms in the palace are looking grand. They are beautifully decorated with carpets and curtains. Fountains are running on the terrace. Sweet smell of roses and chameli is coming from the garden which surrounds the palace.

(iii) I can see small factories where clothes, toys, utensils and shoes are manufactured. Averagely 15-20 people work in each factory. They are making the products using their tools. They are wearing tight clothes. I think they are working for long hours.

(iv) Yes, I can see stone dust in the air. Yes, the stone dust can harm them leading to problems related to breathing if they do not take precautions. Most of the workers have wrapped a cloth around their nose.

(i) What kinds of pots have you seen around you?

(ii) Try to find out from your grandparents about the other kinds of pots and pans they used in their time?

(iii) Have you ever been to some museum or heard about it? What all things are there in a museum?


(i) I have seen several kinds of pots like clay pots, copper pots, bronze pots and steel pots

(ii) My grandparents used pots and pans made of brass, clay, iron and copper.

(iii) Yes, I have been to a museum. In a museum you can see various antique pieces which take you to back in the history.  There are pots, tools, jewellery, weapons and utensils used by the people in past. Some artistic things like paintings and stone carvings can also be seen in the museum.

Survey and Write

(i) Is there any old building or monument near your house which people come to see? If yes, name it.

(ii) Have you ever gone to see an old monument? Which was that? Did you feel it told you a story? What could you know about those times from it?

(iii) How old was it? How did you know?

(iv) What was it made of?

(v) What colour was it?

(vi) Were there any special kind of designs on the old building? Draw them in your notebook.

(vii) Who used to live there in the olden days?

(viii) What kinds of activities took place there?

(ix) Do some people still live there?


(i) Yes, there is a tomb near my house. Many people come to see it. Its name is Humayun’s Tomb.

(ii) Yes, once I went to see Taj Mahal in Agra. I felt like it was telling ne a story of love and grace of that time.  We get to know about the architectural skills, art and culture of that times from it.

 (iii) This is about 400 years old. A guide told us about it.

(iv) It is made up of marbles.

(v) It is of white colour.

(vi) Yes, there were special patterns, designs and carvings on the building.

Note: Search for the images of jaalis in the Red Fort and draw a simple design looking at them.

Look At the Painting

This painting is 500 years old. It shows Agra fort being constructed.

(i) What kinds of work are people doing?

(ii) How many men and women are working?

(iii) See, how they are taking the huge pillar up along the slope? Is it easier to lift a heavy thing straight up or along a slope?

(iv) Were you able to see the man carrying water in a mashak (leather bag)?


(i) People are working on a construction site. They are seen affixing bricks, carrying water or other goods.

(ii) Around 28 men and 4 women are working there.

(iii)  It is easier to lift a heavy thing along a slope than carrying it straight up.

(iv) Yes, I could see a man carrying water in a mashak (leather bag).

(ii) Why do you think the chapter is named, ‘Walls Tell Stories’?


(i) Various old things are preserved in the museum which helps us to explore about the work, culture and living styles if the ancient times.

(ii) This chapter is all about the historical structures and buildings which lets us know about the art, culture, craft, and living styles of people in the historical period. That is why the name ‘Walls Tell Stories’ seems appropriate for this chapter.
