(i) Ayesha put a puffed puri in a bowl of water. Would it sink or float?

(ii) You put a steel plate on water. Would it sink or float? What would happen to a spoon?

(iii) Would the cap of a plastic bottle sink or float on water?

Answer.

(i) Puffed puri  would float in water as it is lighter than water.

(ii) If I put a steel plate on water, it will float. But if I put spoon on water it will sink down.  

(iii) The cap of a plastic bottle would float on water.

Do this experiment in groups of four friends. Each group will need a big pot filled with water and the things listed in the table. Put each thing one-by-one in water and observe.

(i) The iron nail sank in water but the katori floated. I think this happened because the weight of iron nail was more than the weight if water displaced by it but in case of katori its weight is less than the weight of water displaced by it.

(ii) The empty plastic bottle floated on water. The bottle filled with water sank because the weight of empty plastic bottle is less than the weight of water displaced it but when the bottle is filled with water its weight becomes more than the weight of water displaced by it.

(iii) The aluminium foil floated when it was spread out. When pressed tightly into a ball it sank. This may have happened because the weight of flat aluminium foil is less than the weight of water displaced by it but the weight of aluminium ball is more than that of the water displaced by it.

Is It Magic?

(i) Take some water in a glass. Put a lemon in it. Now keep putting salt in the water, half-a-spoon at a time. Were you able to float your lemon in water?

(ii) What do you think, the lemon floated in salty water, because….

Answer.

(i) Yes, I was able to float lemon in water containing excess salt.

(ii) When salt is added to water it became heavy.

Do This Experiment

Make groups of four friends. For the experiment you will need 4-5 glasses or bowls, spoons, water, and the things listed in the table. Take some water in each glass. Now try to dissolve one thing in one glass. Observe what happens and note in the table.

Tell

(i) Could you see the salt after it dissolved in water? If no, why?

(ii) Does that mean that now the water does not have salt? If it has, then where is the salt?

(iii) What difference did you see – in the water with salt, and the water with chalk powder – after keeping for sometime?

(iv) Which of the two would you be able to separate from the water by straining with a cloth – salt or chalk powder?

(v) Do you think the oil got dissolved in the water? Why do you think so?

(vi) You also try to do the same and then tell – which drop went ahead? Why did it slide faster?

Answer.

(i) No, we could not see the salt after it is dissolved in water. This is because salt gets completely mixed with water.

(ii) No, that does not mean that water does not have salt. Salt has broken into smaller particles which have occupied the positions in between the particles of water.

(iii) After keeping for sometime, water with salt looks clear and transparent whereas the water with chalk powder looks whitish with some chalk powder settled down on bottom of glass.

(iv) We would be able to separate chalk powder from water by straining it with a cloth.

(v) Out of the two substances, we would be able to separate chalk powder from water by straining with a cloth.

No, the oil did not get dissolved in water as it formed a layer on the water surface.

Where Did the Water Go?

One day Ayesha’s mother put some water to boil on the stove for making tea. She got busy with something and forgot about it. When she remembered and came back to check, she found only a few drops of water left in the pan.

(i) Think where did the water go?

(ii) Why did Chittibabu and Chinnababu keep their mango jelly under the sun?

(iii) At your house, what things are made by drying in the sun?

Answer.

(i) The water got evaporated.

(ii) Chittibabu and Chinnababu kept their mango jelly under the sun to evaporate water from it and make it dry.

(iii) At my house the things made by drying in the sun are: papad, potato chips, badis and pickles.

What We Have Learnt

(i) You have washed your handkerchief and you want to dry it quickly. What all can you do?

(ii) What things do you put in water to make tea? Which of those things dissolves in water?

(iii) You have been given some mishri pieces (lumps of sugar). Suggest some ways to dissolve them quickly.

Answer.

(i) I will first squeeze the hanky to drain out excess water and then I will hang it in the sun to dry. I can also dry it by ironing.

(ii) We add tea leaves, milk and sugar in water to make tea. Out of all the ingredients, milk and sugar dissolve in water.

(iii) Mishri pieces can be dissolved in water quickly by following any of the two methods given below:

(a) Crush the mishri pieces into a fine powder and then dissolve it into water by stirring continuously.

(b) Dissolve mishri in hot water by stirring continuously.
