1. Jog your brain:

Exercising doesn’t just exercise the body, it also helps to exercise your brain. Exercise benefits the brain by reducing insulin resistance, stimulating the release and survival of new blood vessels in the brain. A research on brain plasticity suggests that exercise helps integrate the new neurons ( nerve cells specialized to transmit signals to the brain) into the brain's circuitry to help improve learning. Exercise also helps to increase the release of neurotransmitters, the brain chemicals that relay signals between nerve cells. So keep your body moving to run your mind. Brisk walking, swimming and dancing are all excellent exercises. Physical fitness directly affects our mind and plays a crucial role in the way the brain develops and function.

2. Eat healthy:

Eating foods that contain a healthy mix of fats is vital for long-term memory.  Some excellent food choices include fish and dark leafy green vegetables. A handful of seeds and nuts also provides a good nutrition and help improve your memory power by stimulating the production of new brain cells.

Getting a consistent 7 to 8 hours of night sleep plays a key to boosting the brainpower. During sleep, the brain firms up memories of recently acquired information. According to the experts, sleep is a crucial time for the brain to solidify the connections between neurons, thus helping us remember more of our tasks.  Taking a nap throughout the day, can also help you to retain the memories as well as recharge the brain.

4. Stay away from Stress:

Stress, anxiety or depression all contribute to memory loss, confusion and poor concentration. Stress and depression actually cause an increase in the levels of cortisol in your bloodstream. Cortisol also known as the stress hormone, is actually found to destroy certain areas of the brain, especially the hippocampus, which is where short-term memories are stored.  Thus, a prolonged depression can diminish the brain’s ability to remember anything new.  So try to stay away from anything that causes you major stress or anxiety. Laughter is considered the best medicine to shed away the stress. Laughter engages multiple regions of the brain and simultaneously reduces stress.

5. Meditation is a must:

Meditation is the practice of sitting and letting the mind to dissolve. It is a state of deep peace that occurs when the mind is calm and silent, yet completely alert. For centuries people have used meditation to move beyond the stress-inducing thoughts and reach the profound tranquility. A number of studies made on meditation show that it is an altered state of consciousness which can prompt changes in the brain region, resulting in an increase in attention span, sharper focus abilities and an improved memory. It also helps to shed away the stress and anxiety. Meditation teaches us how to transform thoughts from negative to positive and plant constructive thoughts. All this results in better concentration leading to an improved memory.

6. Don’t get trapped in multitasking:

In the hustle and bustle of life, we often try to attempt simultaneously as many jobs as possible that ultimately makes you prone to errors as well as make you forgetful. For example, if you had kept your car keys somewhere when you were busy on phone and were carrying groceries then you are more likely to forget where you put the car keys. The brain doesn't actually multitask. Instead, it switches the focus from one thing to the other, which makes it difficult to concentrate on the task at hand and memorize the things. So, when you're juggling too many things, stop yourself and focus your attention back to the task at hand.

7. Write it down:

Penning down the things can also help you memorize them.  Studies have shown that using pen and paper, not laptops, to take notes boosts memory and the ability to retain and understand concepts. Live by to-do lists of your daily routines and keep an update.  Manually writing down new information actually helps reinforce it. Activities like writing journals and keeping a blog also help to improve your capacity to remember and memorize information.

8. Challenge your brain:

Keeping yourself busy in brain challenging activities like crossword puzzles, reading, or play cards helps to keep the brain active and alert but also help to prevent memory loss. If you don't sufficiently challenge your brain with new, surprising information, it eventually begins to deteriorate.  To challenge your brain all you need is to take a different route to work, learn a new language, take a newspaper and solve the crossword puzzles. Keep yourself engaged in the extraordinary activities, because mentally stimulating activities help keep your brain in shape.

9. Recall your memories:

Many of us when sitting for an exam, quite often fail to recall the answers to particular questions that we learned so well during the exam preparation. Actually the memory recall in the brain is not like retrieving a file from disk on a computer, but the memories in the brain are reconstructed rather than retrieved. After studying for some specific hours, take a break to recollect all the stuff what you had learned. While recalling a topic or an answer  think about the concepts related to it. This will help you to easily frame the answer in your brain. But, if failed to recall some stuff then immediately open out the book and go through the same topic and practice it by writing on a page. This will help to keep your learnings affixed to your brain.
