UPSC IAS Exam 2015 – Sociology (Optional) Question Paper I

The Civil Services Mains 2015 Exam – Sociology Paper I (Optional) was held on 23rd December 2015. Here, we have provided IAS Main Sociology (Optional) Question Paper I in linear format:


The Civil Services IAS Exam 2015 was commenced from 18th December 2015 and 23rd December 2015 was the day for the exam of Optional papers. The respective two optional papers, Paper I and Paper II were conducted in morning and afternoon sessions on the same day.

The Sociology (Optional) Question Paper I of UPSC IAS Main Exam 2015 carried total 250 marks and time duration was limited to 3 hours. A candidate has to attempt five questions out of eight questions in which Question number 1 and 5 were compulsory and out of the remaining questions, three were to be attempted choosing at least one from each section.

SECTION – A

(a) Is Sociology a Science ? Give reasons for your answer.

(b) Examine the problems of maintaining objectivity and value neutrality in Social Science  research.   20

(c)  “Self and Society are twin-born." Examine the statement of Mead.                                           10

Q3.  (a) Why is random sampling said to have more reliability and validity in  research?                    20

(b) Differentiate  between  Marxian  and  Weberian  theories  of  Social  Stratification.                          20

(c) How had Enlightenment contributed to the emergence of Sociology ?                                          10

Q4.  (a) "Non-positivistic  methodology  is  essential  for  understanding human behaviour." Discuss.   20

(b) How is social equilibrium maintained in Parsonian framework?                                            20

(c) "Anomie is rooted in social structure." Explain with reference to R.K. Merton's contribution.         10

(b) The increasing importance of the tertiary sector has weakened the  formal  organization of work in recent times. Examine the statement.                 20

Q8. (a) "Globalization involves deterritorialization." Examine with reference to the nation-state.    20

(b) Examine the dialectical relation between tradition and modernity in the study of social change.  20

(c) Elaborate the views of Durkheim on "The Elementary Forms of Religious Life".                    10
