What is UPSC IAS?

The UPSC CSE comprises three stages: the Preliminary Examination (Prelims), the Main Examination (Mains), and the Personality Test (Interview). Each stage tests different aspects of your knowledge, aptitude, and personality. Once you understand the UPSC exam pattern, it is time to make a study plan so that maximum time can be used for preparation. The first step of preparation should be checking out the syllabus of UPSC CSE. The syllabus acts as a road map, guiding you through the wide range of subjects you must study. Take your time reading the syllabus carefully, noting the various subjects and their subtopics as you go.

UPSC CSE Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

The preliminary examination consists of two objective-type examinations, namely General Studies Paper I (GS Paper I) and General Studies Paper II (GS Paper II or CSAT). GS Paper I includes questions from History, Geography, Politics, Economics, Science, and Current Affairs, whereas GS Paper II, or CSAT, includes Reading Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Aptitude. CSAT is a qualifying exam, which requires students to achieve just 33% of the marks.

UPSC CSE Mains Examination (Mains)

If candidates clear the preliminary exam, they will be qualified to take the main examination. The major test is a written examination consisting of nine exams, seven of which are used to determine the final list. These papers include essay writing, general studies, and optional subjects. The essay paper assesses your analytical and writing abilities, while the general studies papers examine your knowledge of a variety of areas such as history, geography, economics, politics, current events, science and technology, and so on.
