The 18th Lok Sabha's inaugural session began on Monday, with newly elected members, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, taking their oaths of office. Earlier in the day, President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, who will serve as the protem Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
The election for the Speaker of the Lok Sabha is scheduled for June 26, followed by President Murmu's address to a joint session of both Houses on June 27. The session is set to conclude on July 3.
Opposition Set to Corner Government
During the session, the opposition coalition INDIA bloc is expected to challenge the NDA government on several issues, including food inflation, rising costs, heatwave-related deaths, and recent irregularities in exam administration for NEET UG, NEET PG, and UGC NET. These irregularities have sparked unrest among students and raised concerns about the effectiveness of the organizations responsible for conducting these exams.
Historic Day for New Parliament
The swearing-in ceremony is being held at the new Parliament building. Traditionally, this event has always taken place at the old Parliament building, for the first time since independence, marking a significant change in venue.
This election holds particular significance as it marks the second occasion since independence where the citizens of the country have granted a government the chance to serve for a third consecutive term.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi welcomed all the newly elected members of the 18th Lok Sabha in front of the media. PM Modi remarked, "The people of our country have given us a mandate for the third time. This is a significant and resounding victory. Our responsibility has tripled... Therefore, I assure our fellow citizens that in our third term, we will work with triple the effort and achieve three times the results."
Congress MP Manickam Tagore Expresses Dissatisfaction on Appointment of Pro-tem Speaker
Speaking to ANI, Tagore expressed his dissatisfaction with the government's attitude, describing it as arrogant. He criticized the government for overlooking K Suresh, an 8-term Dalit MP who he believed should have been appointed as the pro-tem speaker. Tagore mentioned that the decision was made without consulting the opposition parties, which he found unfortunate.

Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and other leaders from Congress staged a protest inside the Parliament premises.

PM Narendra Modi stated, "Tomorrow is June 25th. It marks 50 years since a dark chapter was written in India's democratic history. The youth of India will never forget when the Constitution of India was completely disregarded, every part of it torn apart, the country turned into a prison, and democracy completely suppressed."
