42nd Edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) concluded in Panaji on 3 December 2011

The 42nd edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) was held in Panaji, Goa from 23 November to 3 December 2011. Film star Shah Rukh Khan inaugurated the 42nd edition of IFFI. The inaugural ceremony was marked by presentation of Life Time Achievement award, which was revived after almost 10 years to French film maker Bertrand Tavernier by Shah Rukh Khan.


The 10-day festival, featured 6680 delegates from India and around the world, and 165 films. The films were divided in the categories of Indian Panaroma - Fiction and Non Fiction, World Cinema, Retrospectives, Country Focus (US, Poland and Russia), Three Dimension and Soccer Packages.


The festival also included classics from Tagore, such as Milan, Streer Patra, Charulata and Kshudita Pashan. Films of Mani Kaul, Shammi Kapoor, Samir Chanda and M.F. Husain were also showcased.


World Cinema films Pina, Artist, Agha Yousef, How big is your love, My Australia, Starbuck, Porfirio and Majidleft an impact on the audience.


The opening film of the festival was The Consul of Bordeaux, directed by Francisco Manso and Joao Correa. The 42nd IFFI came to an end with the Asia premiere of the film The Lady directed by Luc Besson.


Besides the films, there were a spate of master classes, discussions, seminars, documentaries and short films, open forums and networking events at eight locations spread over two cities of Panjim and Margao.


The Firsts


The festival was marked by several firsts. For the first time, the inauguration ceremony was held 30 km away from the main action point. There was a first-ever open screen on a football ground for free display of soccer films. The festival was the first to feature the new sections like 3D, Animation (Sketches on Screen) and Festival Kaleidoscope films.


Awards presented during the Festival


The 42nd International Film Festival of India come to an end at the Kala Academy in Panaji with the presentation of awards in five different segments. The Golden Peacock Award for the Best Film was given to a Columbian Film Porfirio. The Chief Guest of the closing ceremony, Southern Superstar, Suriya presented the award to the Director Alejandro Landes and Producer, Francisco Aljure.


The Silver Peacock Award for Best Actor (Female) category was given to the actor Nadezhda Markina for her role in the Russian film Elena. Whereas, the Silver Peacock Award for Best Actor (Male) category was won by Sasson Gabey for his role in an Israeli film Restoration.


The Special Jury Award was presented to Salim Ahamed for directing Malayalam film Adaminte Makan Abu meaning Abu, Son of Adam. The Special Jury Award carries a Silver Peacock Trophy, a certificate and Rs. 15 lakh.


The five members Jury under the chairmanship of Adoor Gopalakrishnan had screened 14 films from as many countries and unanimously decided the awards.


History of IFFI


The 1st edition of IFFI was organized by the Films Division, Government of India, with the patronage of the first Prime Minister of India. The 1st edition was held in Mumbai from 24 January to 1 February 1952. The festival travelled to Madras, Delhi Calcutta and Trivandrum.


From the 3rd edition in January 1965, IFFI’s became competitive. It was since then moved to Trivandrum, capital of Kerala. In 1975 the Filmotsav, non-competitive and to be held in other filmmaking cities in alternate years, was introduced. Filmotsavs were later merged in IFFI’s. In 2004 the IFFI was moved to Goa from Trivandrum. Since then the IFFI has been an annual event and competitive.


The festival aims at providing a common platform for the cinemas of the world to project the excellence of the film art. It aims at contributing to the understanding and appreciation of film cultures of different nations in the context of their social and cultural ethos; and promoting friendship and cooperation among people of the world.


The festival is conducted jointly by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Government of Goa.
