Assam contributed more than 50 percent of the country’s total tea production in 2011. Assam produced around 509 million kg tea which also led the India’s total tea output to 988.32 million kg in this period. It is for the third time that the state has crossed the 500 million kg mark in terms of tea production.
Assam achieved the record of producing second highest tea in its 180 years old history. Earlier in 2007, the state produced 512 million kilogram tea. Assam has recorded an increase of over 5 percent in comparison to 2010. Assam has around one lakh small tea gardens. The annual turnover of this industry is Rs five thousand crore and it employs over 10 lakh people. Tea Board of India has already announced a slew of measures for the benefit of the small tea growers.
