Arvind Kejriwal's close aide Atishi Marlena will take over as Chief Minister of Delhi. Atishi, the Minister of Education, will become the third female chief minister of Delhi and the eighth chief minister of the nation's capital.
The party officials further announced that the Delhi Assembly will meet on September 26 and 27. Delhi Cabinet Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj had already said that Sunita Kejriwal will not be taking over for her husband at the legislative party meeting.
Atishi Marlena: New CM of Delhi
On Monday, at the Political Affairs Committee, AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal had "one-on-one" meetings with party officials on the nomination of a new chief minister for Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal proposed Atishi Marlena to be the new CM of Delhi. This decision has been welcomed by the party officials.
It is expected that Kejriwal will submit his resignation during his meeting with Lt Governor VK Saxena today at 4:30 p.m. According to official sources, Delhi Lt Governor has scheduled a meeting at 4:30 p.m today.
Prior to this, the AAP had reported that Kejriwal was expected to submit his resignation and has requested a meeting with the lieutenant governor today.
Atishi Marlena to Become Youngest CM of Delhi
Atishi has been selected by Arvind Kejriwal for the position of Delhi's Chief Minister, making her the second youngest CM in Delhi's history.
Atishi will take oath as Delhi CM at the age of 43 years becoming the second youngest CM, after Chaudhary Brahm Prakash, who became Delhi CM at the age of 34. Prior to this, Arvind Kejriwal was the second youngest, taking office at 46.
Arvind Kejriwal Stepping Down
Following his bail release from Tihar jail in relation to the excise policy issue, the national convenor of the AAP announced on Sunday that he would step down within 48 hours. He further advocated for early elections in Delhi.
Kejriwal also made a vow to not sit on the chair of Delhi Chief Minister, till the citizens of Delhi give him a "certificate of honesty" by once again electing him during the elections.
