RIM, the maker of BlackBerry in a meeting with DoT officials offered to set up a local server in India.

Research In Motion (RIM), the maker of BlackBerry devices on 29 December 2010 in a meeting with DoT officials offered to set up a local server in India within the next 18-24 months. The local server would be set up by RIM on condition that the Government would give an assurance that there will be no ban imposed on its corporate email services in the interim period. RIM urged that the Indian government should ask that other enterprise communication service providers to set up local service providers.

Security agencies in India had asked RIM to provide a solution to snoop into data flowing through BlackBerry devices. RIM already offered a solution to intercept voice calls, chat sessions and BlackBerry Messenger but it has expressed its inability to allow security agencies to track the enterprise email service since the technology was built for secure communication.
