Birth Centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
• Bangladesh celebrates the birth anniversary of its founder and first President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 17, 2020. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid homage at Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence in Dhanmondi area in Dhaka.
• President Abdul Hameed said that his principles and ideals will continue to inspire generations on the eve of the birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. 
• Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on March 17, 1920 in Gopalganj district of undivided India. In East Pakistan, he had agitated against the oppressive policies of the Pakistani rulers.

Former Rajya Sabha member and veteran journalist Patil Puttappa passed away
• Veteran journalist and Rajya Sabha member Patil Putappa died at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS). He died due to age-related illnesses.
• He was the founder and editor of the weekly magazine "Prapancha". He actively participated in the freedom struggle. He was also the President of the Kannada Watchdog Committee. 
• Puttappa has written several books in Kannada language, prominent among them are: Kavita Lekhakaru, Nivu Nagbeku, Karnataka Sangeeta Kalarathanaru etc.

Pakistan Super League postponed amid COVID-19 pandemic
• The Pakistan Cricket Board has postponed the remaining matches of the Premier T20 tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The semi-final matches were scheduled to be played in Lahore.
• The board has also cancelled the ODI and Test matches with Bangladesh. A domestic tournament has also been suspended. In Pakistan, 184 cases of COVID-19 were found till March 16, 2020.
• According to the media reports, Multan Sultans were to take on Peshawar Zalmi at the Gaddafi Stadium. Apart from that Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars were scheduled to play a match at the same stadium.

EPFO cuts interest rate to 8.5 percent
• The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) reduced the interest rate on the Employees Provident Fund to 8.5 percent for 2019-20. The EPFO's Central Board of Trustees (CBT) has taken this decision for its six crore users. 
• CBT is the apex decision-making body associated with EPFO. The interest rate on the provident fund for the financial year 2018-19 was 8.65 percent.
• This is the lowest interest on the provident fund in the last 7 years. Labour and Employment Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar said that 8.5 percent interest will impact savings of Rs 700 crore.

UP Govt passes ordinance to recover damages to property during protests
• The Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh has decided to bring an ordinance to compensate for losses from people who have damaged public and private properties during protests, agitations, processions and dharna.
• The Uttar Pradesh Government has notified that the ‘Uttar Pradesh Recovery of Damage to Public and Private Property Ordinance, 2020 will help state government. It says that the recovery of illegal nuisances should compensate for the loss of property.
• The state government had also put up posters of the accused of violence during the riots. But, Allahabad High Court had given orders to remove the posters. The state government has gone to the Supreme Court against this for now.
