Delhi Air Pollution: In response to the rising air pollution in Delhi, the state government has once again launched the 'Red Light On, Gaadi Off' campaign. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai launched this initiative on Monday, October 21. The campaign aims to reduce pollution by encouraging drivers to turn off their vehicles at red lights while waiting.
This campaign is launched in response to the increasing smog and pollution levels, particularly during the winter months. It is hoped that this effort will help provide some relief from the growing air quality issues.
What is the 'Red Light On, Gaadi Off' Campaign?
As part of the campaign, people are encouraged to turn off their vehicle engines while waiting at red lights or traffic signals to reduce carbon emissions, thus somewhat controlling the pollution level in the UT. The campaign was launched at the ITO intersection in Delhi.
In a short video shared by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on X, activists were seen holding posters with messages like "War Against Pollution." Gopal Rai also handed out roses to auto drivers to promote the campaign.

Delhi Air Pollution in ‘Poor’ Category
The campaign was launched when the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was in the 'poor' category. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi's 24-hour average AQI was 265 at 9 a.m. on Sunday, October 20.
Stubble Burning in Haryana and UP
After launching the campaign, Gopal Rai expressed worry about the rising pollution levels, saying they could increase even more during the winter months. He emphasized that people in Delhi are more affected by pollution from outside the city than by pollution within it.
Gopal Rai said, "In addition to dust and vehicle emissions, stubble burning is also contributing to pollution." He noted that stubble-burning cases have decreased in Punjab, which is governed by the AAP, while they are increasing in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
