The Delhi state Cabinet on 7 April 2011 approved the division of Municipal Corporation of Delhi into five corporations. There would be a total of 408 wards with six in every Assembly segment. The Delhi Cabinet took this decision on the recommendation of a committee headed by Health Minister AK Walia and constituted by the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in February 2011. Other members of the committee were BJP leader VK Malhotra, jagdish Mukhi, Arvinder Singh Lovely and Raj Kumar Chauhan.
The committee was formed to study the functioning of the MCD and to suggest measures to overcome the problems and better its financial management.
